Gauss Labs is facing various challenges until it grows into an AI-specialized company that encompasses manufacturing companies around the world. How is the research organization of Gauss Labs working? I had a conversation with Brandon Choe, who is holding the key as the leader of Gauss Labs' Computer Vision organization.
Hello. Please introduce what kind of role you are playing in Gauss Labs.
Leading the fields of Computer Vision and Image Processing in R&D. With the goal of developing world-class solutions for industrial image processing, we are in charge of computer vision algorithms and software development.
What career experiences did you have that led you to come to Gauss Labs?
He has grown his career as a computer vision engineer, software engineer, and engineering manager at Intel and Samsung Electronics. The OpenCV, OpenVINO Toolkit, and Movidius VPU development organizations participated in the development of computer vision software and hardware, and provided a solution equipped with a computer vision algorithm developed in-house. As computer vision technology matured rapidly to a level that could be commercialized with deep learning, we experienced the process of industrialization of AI with customers and partners around the world.
After gaining this experience, why did you choose to join a company called Gauss Labs? Starting in 2020, it must not have been an easy task to enter a company with a short history.
Since last year, I have been seeing the trend of the AI industry moving towards the Industrial AI market. When it comes to doing AI in Korea, I thought that the best opportunity was in Industrial AI. Korean companies' manufacturing competitiveness is the best in the world, and I thought that if AI was applied to develop practical solutions, it would be the best AI product that could be used around the world.
At this time, I came to know Gauss Labs, which had the same goal as me and was creating a good corporate culture. We already have a development environment with access to real manufacturing data and the best talent. I joined without much trouble.
I'm also curious about the projects the team is currently working on.
We are working on a project to analyze semiconductor images and processes. Because it deals with microscopic processes in the nanometer scale, we are developing solutions with high accuracy by combining deep learning and conventional computer vision techniques, which is a little different from common computer vision algorithms. The goal is to increase the efficiency of semiconductor measurement, which is required a lot in the semiconductor process, and ultimately contribute to the improvement of semiconductor quality.
Gauss Labs is receiving full capital investment from SK Hynix and is dreaming of innovation in manufacturing as an AI company. What are the specific empirical advantages of working in the research organization of Gauss Labs?
With a stable investment, you can focus on research and development that will have a high impact from a long-term perspective. Another advantage is that the best global talents in each field are working together in Korea and the United States. You can work freely in a corporate culture where the strengths of startups and large companies coexist, but you can experience big problems while thinking intensely together and growing together.
I also want to ask about the development culture of Gauss Labs. What kind of organizational culture is the Gauss Labs research organization creating?
There are 7 'Gaussian Principles' that symbolize Gauss Labs' culture.
Among them, 'Highest Standards' and 'Readiness for Deep Dive' seem to be the principles that best describe our research organization. In order to achieve a high level, we are creating a culture where we think deeply and discuss effectively with each other.
Agile development methodologies are optionally applied for transparent and efficient communication. We work closely with the Project Management organization and operate as a matrix organization, so the horizontal relationship with the manager is more important than the upper-level relationship with the manager.
It seems that there are difficulties in the current job.
As Gauss Labs is walking on a path that no one has gone before, it has to solve problems that existing AI technology cannot solve. Since it is the process of creating a reference-free solution, we try to create our own principles in most of our judgments and decisions. We are trying to combine various theoretical backgrounds to solve problems without falling into the dogma of a specific technology field.
What competencies do you need to enter Gauss Labs as a research job?
Applied Scientist job requires the ability to rationally define problems by analyzing given data with insight. The ability to solve problems by introducing the latest research techniques, etc., and to create solutions properly is also required.
The software engineer job requires the ability to design and implement complex AI SW platforms based on solid fundamentals such as algorithms and data structures. Because we develop solutions that solve new problems, we focus more on problem-solving skills and basic skills than on past experiences.

In order to join Gauss Labs, what competencies or experiences should be highlighted when filling out documents or interviewing? Any tips please?
You will go through several stages of an interview, mainly technical interviews. In-depth interviews are conducted to ask whether you have basic knowledge in the field, understand the latest research techniques, have development skills such as coding, and can design machine learning in a given problem.
The most important thing to consider is problem-solving ability. 'Focus on What and Why', path-finding complex problems and identifying who can create solid solutions.

Starting with the semiconductor industry, Gauss Labs is on a journey to solve a challenge that no one has been able to solve to achieve industry-wide innovation through AI.
